Kevin Joe Steffes

July 17, 1970 — December 6, 2014

Kevin Joe, son of Blane and Colleen (Hackfort) Steffes, was born July 17, 1970 in Carroll, Iowa. The family lived around Templeton and Kevin started school there and later they moved to Willey where he continued his schooling. Kevin graduated from Carroll High School where he excelled in football, serving as co-captain, and wrestling, where he finished 5th in the State. After graduating in May of 1988 Kevin entered the United States Marine Corps in September of that year. He completed basic training in San Diego, CA and continued in school to become an amphibious assault vehicle mechanic. Following that training he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for a year. In 1990 he was transferred to 29 Palms, CA then sent to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Following those conflicts he returned to 29 Palms where he was honorably discharged in September of 1992. Upon his return to Iowa he started working as a mechanic at Haley Equipment. Kevin was an excellent mechanic and valued employee. His co-workers at Haley nicknamed him Phil' in honor of a musician look alike. He loved his work and considered his fellow employees his extended family. Not only was Kevin a dedicated worker at Haley's, he was dedicated to helping others in any way possible. He was deeply involved with his family and, for the past 12 years, the love of his life Lisa Rehm. He was a happy guy and loved to tease his nieces and nephews who adored him. Kevin was a lifetime member of the Dedham American Legion Dewitt Loustaunau Post 22 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2642 in Carroll. Kevin's life was cut short when he was involved in a single car accident near his home in rural Templeton. He died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at St Anthony Hospital in Carroll at the age of 44 years, 4 months and 19 days. Preceding him in death are his father Blane Steffes in 2007 and his infant brother Kyle Steffes. Kevin is survived by his partner in life and best friend Lisa Rehm of Templeton and her son Keith Rehm of Sac City; mother Colleen Steffes of Carroll; four brothers Kent Steffes of Ankeny, Kurt Steffes (Veronica) of Dallas, TX, Kory Steffes (Valerie) of Dallas, TX and Kyron Steffes and fiancé Sarah Heuton of Carroll; seven nieces and nephews and four great nieces and nephews; special aunt Doreen Stueve of Carroll; other aunts and uncles; and many other relatives and friends.
