Kenneth Ludwig, son of Herman and Amelia (Ludwig) Pietig, was born February 26, 1925 at Carroll, Iowa. He attended St. Peter and Paul’s Parochial School in Carroll and then Carroll High School. He was drafted into the United States Army before his 19th birthday in 1944. Kenneth served in the infantry during World War II, first in the Philippine Islands. Then he was with the occupation forces in Tokyo, Japan, in communications.
After his honorable discharge in 1946 he returned to the family farm. His father died suddenly and unexpectedly that winter. He was able to continue farming with the help of his mother and brothers.
On November 27, 1948 Kenneth was united in marriage with Jean Duffy at St. John’s Church in Arcadia with her uncle Reverend William Bucholz officiating. They were the parents of six children. Kenneth and Jean remained on the family farm and raised their children there. They were members of Holy Spirit Parish. Kenneth was a member of the Carroll American Legion for over 70 years. The couple enjoyed dancing, playing cards and traveling. Kenneth also enjoyed listening to old time gospel music. His greatest satisfaction in life was growing things – crops, animals and later in life his gardens.
Kenneth enjoyed a long and fulfilling life. He died peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Carroll on Friday, September 16, 2016. He was 91 years, 6 months and 21 days of age.
Preceding him in death are his parents; granddaughter Amber Pietig; great grandson Nolan Pietig; two brothers Howard Pietig and Marvin (Annabelle) Pietig; two sisters Lynette (Forest) Case and Marjorie (Orville) Kock.
Kenneth is survived by his wife Jean Pietig of Carroll; six children Nancy (Harold) Orth of Council Bluffs, Randy (Karen) Pietig of Carroll, Kevin (Jayne) Pietig of Carroll, Kay (Steve) Nichols of Lubbock, TX, Allen (Donna) Pietig of Carroll and Karla (Bill) Brown of Glidden; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one step great grandson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
