Kathryn Vollstedt
Kathryn Grace Amanda, daughter of Ed and Lena (Jahn) Kuhl, was born November 11, 1915, on the family farm in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Kathryn attended rural school near her home and then Manning High School.
On February 14, 1936, Kathryn was united in marriage with Virtus Vollstedt at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They farmed west of Manning and were the parents of two children. Shortly after the death of her husband in 1966, Kathryn moved into Manning and was self-employed. She also worked as a cook at Cheley Boys Camp in Colorado for 12 summers.
Kathryn was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and a loyal member of Zion Altar and Sewing Guilds and Evening Circle. She served on the Evangelism Committee and was an active participant in many Bible Studies. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, baking, vegetable and flower gardening, and spending time with family and friends. In later years she read a lot and painted.
Kathryn moved from her home in Manning to the Manning Plaza as her health started to deteriorate. She had been a resident for about a month before she entered Manning Regional Healthcare Center where she died on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 14 days.
Preceding Kathryn in death are her parents; husband; son Dale Vollstedt in 2006; sisters Elsie Wilhelm and Melvina Vollstedt; and brothers Herbert Kuhl and Marvin Kuhl.
She is survived by her daughter Sylvia and husband Joe Engel of Tomah, WI; daughter-in-law Darlene Vollstedt of Manning; seven grandchildren: Dr. Keith Vollstedt and wife Jaclyn of Sioux City; Karen and husband Bary Kienast of Manning; Kathy Vollstedt of Manning; Kent Vollstedt and wife Karen of Manning; Joe Engel Jr. and fianc Janna Wedemeier of Tomah, WI; Jennifer and husband Mark Alder of Tomah, WI; Jeff Engel and wife Karyn of Sun Prairie, WI; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; Brother Marcus Kuhl and wife Alice of Denison; nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
