Juanita Belle, daughter of Victor and Goldie (Lewis) Shaffer, was born January 30, 1924, at Bayard as the youngest of seven siblings. She attended school in Bayard, graduating from Bayard High School in 1942.
Juanita was united in marriage with Emmert “Pete” Petersen on March 15, 1946. They lived in Audubon before moving to Glidden. One daughter, Victoria, was born to this union. They later divorced.
On July 21, 1973, Juanita married Earl Johnson of Coon Rapids and they made their home in Coon Rapids. The couple enjoyed camping and annual trips to Montana & Alabama. Earl passed away in January of 1995.
In their later years Juanita & Pete were reunited and married again on September 25, 2004, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They enjoyed several years together before Pete passed away in January of 2012.
Through the years, Juanita worked at the Drug Store in Audubon, then at the “egg house” in Glidden. After moving to Coon Rapids she worked at General Electric in Carroll, retiring in 1986. After a few years in retirement she began work at the Garst Seed lab. Juanita valued the many friends she made while working, and her greatest joy was her family and her granddaughters. She was known for her baking, especially the coffee rings she would make for family and friends at Christmas. Juanita always enjoyed travel, making trips to the East Coast, Florida, New Orleans and Hawaii. Her last trip was a family cruise in the Caribbean. Juanita was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church since 1973.
Juanita lived in her home in Coon Rapids with her cat Lilly until December of 2015 when she became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home. She died there on Sunday morning March 6, 2016, at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 6 days.
Juanita is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; brothers Merle Shaffer, Stanley Shaffer, Andy Shaffer and Rex Shaffer; and sisters Nedra Whitefield and Audrey Lee.
