   Joseph T. Twit, son of Thomas and Katherine (Iten) Twit, was born March 30, 1920, at Browerville, Minnesota. He attended St. John's College in Collegeville, MN, from 1938 to 1939 and the University of Minnesota from 1939 to 1940, receiving his mortuary-science degree.  He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as a pier superintendent from 1943 to 1946.   Joe was united in marriage to Josephine Grabarkiewicz at St. Augustine Church in Austin, MN, on Sept. 15, 1947. Four children were born into this union.   From 1946 to 1954 Joe was assistant manager at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin. He began his business in Carroll in 1954 by purchasing Olerich Funeral Home. He sold the funeral home to his son Tom in 1976 and continued to serve families until his recent illness. He held a funeral director's license for 67 years.   Joe was involved in the formation of the Carroll Little League in 1954 and served as commissioner for 10 years.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Maurice Dunn Post 7 of the American Legion. He was a charter member of Carroll Kiwanis Club. He served on the committee that started the Pheasants Forever Chapter in Carroll in 1985. He had a lifelong love of the outdoors and hunting.

    Joe died of leukemia Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at his home in Carroll, at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 24 days.   Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Katherine Twit; a brother, Jerome Twit; and a son-in-law, Jonathon Martin.   He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of Carroll; sons, Tom Twit and his wife, Sue, of Carroll and Dr. Jerry Twit and his fiance, Pamela Somers, of Stevens Point, WI.; daughters, Judy Gilger and her husband, Mike, of Ames, and Diane Martin of Union, IA; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, LaDonna Slowik and her husband, Phil, of Mesa, AZ.
