Joseph Frank, son of Louis and Frances (Willenborg) Uhlenkamp, was born September 23, 1930 in Dedham, Iowa. He moved with his family to Templeton, where he attended Sacred Heart School. After completing his schooling, Joseph started working with his dad laying tile. In 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After four years he was out of the service for a short time before reenlisting during the Korean War. He then served two tours during the Vietnam Conflict earning his honorable discharge in 1972 after serving twenty years.
Joseph was united in marriage with Shirley Marie Andersen on November 10, 1960 in Denver, CO. Five children were born to this union. The family followed their dad to various Air Force and Army bases around the United States. A couple years after Joseph’s final discharge, the family settled in Carroll, IA. They were members of St. Lawrence and then Holy Spirit Parish. Joseph was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He favorite pastime was reading historical fiction, primarily military related.
After the death of his wife Shirley on November 3, 2006, Joseph remained in their home. When he could no longer live alone, he moved to Swan House in Carroll where he died early Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 28 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Shirley Uhlenkamp; sister, Dolores Brincks; brother-in-law, Norbert Brincks; brother-in-law, Jack Foley; and nephew, Thomas Brincks.
Joseph is survived by his five children Mark (Jean) Uhlenkamp of Westside, Marilyn (John) Sander of Omaha, NE, Ron (Dawn) Uhlenkamp of Carroll, James (Jane) Uhlenkamp of Mt. Ayr and Erika Uhlenkamp of Clive; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Foley of Carroll; brother, Henry Uhlenkamp of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
