John Richard “Dick” Wiederien, son of Leo and Florence (Conroy) Wiederien, was born October 4, 1934, on the family farm in Grant Township near Carroll, Iowa. When Dick was eight years old, his family moved to a farm east of Lidderdale. Dick and some of his siblings attended Holy Family School in Lidderdale where he graduated from the eighth grade.
At the age of eleven, Dick fell off of a horse while doing farm chores. He remained unconscious for nine weeks and was paralyzed on one side of his body. While this may have slowed Dick down, he stayed on the farm and helped his parents with many of the chores. He helped tend to the large yard and helped his mother with her garden. His father also had him help with herding the cattle. Dick also kept busy tending and raising chickens. For many years, he sold fresh farm eggs to many people in the Carroll area. In 2004, Dick moved off the farm and eventually became a resident of the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, where he passed away on Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25, 2018. He was 84 years of age
Dick was a member of St. Lawrence Church and prayed the Rosary several times a day. He loved music, and playing cards and dominos. Dick never let his disability define him. He was very strong in body and mind and could always manage a smile.
Dick is survived by two sisters: Rita Kennebeck of Carroll; and Bernice Wenck and husband William of Carroll; a sister-in-law Lola Wiederien of Glidden; and by several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Florence Wiederien; brothers Paul Wiederien and wife Evelyn and Gene Wiederien; a sister Delores Wiederien in infancy; a nephew Lee Wiederien; and a brother-in-law Joseph “Bud” Kennebeck.
