Funeral services for John Ostrand of De Soto will be held on May 26, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Manning Cemetery, Manning, Iowa

John Raymond Ostrand, son of Raymond F. and Thelma J. (Schreck) Ostrand, was born January 17, 1953, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Des Moines. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from East High School in 1971. After high school, John worked at Economy Forms in Des Moines, and later at Bosselman Hartner Truck stop in Altoona. While at the truck stop, he acquired the nickname Johnny O, which he was known as, throughout the rest of his life. John then worked at Iowa Lutheran Hospital for 7 years before becoming the manager of the Wash Bay area at the Bar-B Truckstop in Urbandale. Later, ManPower got him a job with Nott Company where he was a certified technician to make Jaws of Life equipment. Lastly, John washed trucks at Rhoades Trucking in Van Meter.

On May 28, 1988, John was united in marriage with the love of his life Linda Derner at Trinity Lutheran Church near Van Meter. They made their home in De Soto.

For several years, John was a drag racer at Eddyville. Throughout the years, he liked to fish, hunt, visit with people and watch NASCAR and drag racing. John enjoyed helping people when asked. He liked to make people laugh and be happy.

John was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, and experienced numerous complications and a gradual decline of health. On Saturday, November 19, 2022, John passed away at his home in De Soto, Iowa, the age of 69 years, 10 months and 2 days.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda Ostrand of De Soto; sister Victoria Phillips of Des Moines; and by nephews Josh Phillips of Norwalk and Mikka Phillips of Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Mark Ostrand, as well as, his parents in laws, Roland and Laura Derner.
