John Leonard Halbur, son of Leonard and Darlene (Thede) Halbur, was born May 8, 1949, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Maple River and attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school. He graduated from Kuemper High School in 1967. John was united in marriage with Jacqueline George in 1967 and four children were born to this union. John entered the Iowa National Guard in November 1967 and also served in the Army Reserve in Ft. Dodge and Sac City. He was united in marriage with Cindy Smith in 1981 and one child was born to this union. John was a dedicated and hard-working employee and worked as a material handler at Ideal Manufacturing, Scranton Manufacturing, Carroll Coolers and Quebecor in Carroll until his retirement in 2011. John was united in marriage with Jean McMullen on January 12, 1993. John was a big "kid" at heart and would show anyone who visited his motorcycles and guns. He was a member of the Western Iowa Cycle Riders. John also enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting deer and pheasant, gardening and watching action and horror movies. John will be remembered as a man who put his family first and tried to make every day count. Returning from a hunting trip in Guthrie County, Iowa, John died as a result of a vehicle accident on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. He was 63 years, 6 months and 27 days of age. John is preceded in death by his grandparents; son Shawn P. Halbur in 2008; daughter-in-law Scarlette Halbur in 2008; grandson Jacob Gibbs; two great grandchildren; brother Joe Halbur; father-in-law Orville Riessen; and niece Opal Morris. Survivors include his wife Jean Halbur of Carroll; parents Leonard and Darlene Halbur of Carroll; children: Angela Gibbs (Ron) of Gowrie; Christina Brockelsby (Joe) of Sioux City; Gennifer Quillen (Dennis) of Sioux City; Captain Timothy Halbur of Evansdale; Mandy Goehring (Terry) of Perry; step-sons: Bryce McMullen (Jessica) of Denison and Mike McMullen (Tara) of Cedar Rapids; 25 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; siblings: Judy Moorhouse (Dave) of Glidden; Janis Berger (John) of Carroll; Joyce Morris (Wayne) of Jefferson; James Halbur (Kitty) of Carroll; mother-in-law Marie Riessen of Denison; brother-in-law Jerry Riessen of St. Paul, MN; sister-in-law Sherry Greteman of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
