Joan Hastings Holmquist, daughter of Bernard O. and Catherine (Hastings) Holmquist was born December 8, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska. She grew up in Omaha, and graduated from Brownell Hall in 1941. In 1947 Joan was a Princess of the Ak-Sar-Ben Ball in Omaha. On September 9, 1948, Joan married John R. Hornberger in a ceremony held at her parents home in Omaha. After living in Omaha and Iowa City for short periods while Dr. John was finishing his medical residency, they moved to Manning, Iowa in 1950. Two sons were born shortly thereafter: John Jr., and Richard.
Early in her life in Manning, she spent years as a Cub Scout leader, Bible School teacher and was an avid golfer and bowler. After the boys were through school, she was actively involved in Dr. Johns medical practice. Joan had been active in Chapter IS - PEO, Order of the Eastern Star, the Manning Womens Club, and was a board member of the Manning Public Library. She also logged well over a thousand volunteer hours at the St. Anthony Hospital Gift and Coffee Shop in Carroll, Iowa. The First Presbyterian Church in Manning was her church home where she served as Elder, Trustee and choir member.
Joan moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in late 2006 into a care facility after the death of her husband. Sunrise Senior Living delighted in having Joan as an honorary staff person at the facility. She passed away at Sunrise Senior Living on October 29, 2008.
Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Hornberger, M.D., and brothers, Charles Holmquist and Lawrence Holmquist.
Joan is survived by sons John R. Hornberger Jr. and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Richard Hornberger and wife Mary Wiese of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren: Amanda, Austin, and Nicholas Hornberger, all of Colorado; sisters-in-law Nancy Hornberger of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Cindy Holmquist of Denver, Colorado; other relatives and many friends.
Please, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations to either the First Presbyterian Church, 517 " 2nd St. Manning, Iowa 51455, or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, Arizona 85014.
