Joan Ann, daughter of Henry A. and Mary (Marie Sextro) Drees, was born January 6, 1934, on a farm near Templeton, Iowa. She attended Templeton Sacred Heart Elementary, St. Angela Academy in Carroll, and graduated in 1951 from Sacred Heart High School. Fond memories of high school were being in the Senior Play as a sophomore and being an accomplished basketball player. Joan then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, then left to help her family at home.

On November 20, 1954, Joan was united in marriage with Donald Bauer at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. The couple made their home in Carroll where Joan worked as a Northwestern Bell Telephone Operator. In 1964, the family moved to Manilla. Joan babysat and then joined the IKM Community School as a Teacher Associate for 27 years. She enjoyed being known as “The Whistle Lady” and had a passion for helping those around her.

Joan’s Catholic faith was a strong part of her life. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. She taught CCD and was the Co-coordinator for over 30 years, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Joan loved the town of Manilla and helping with community projects such as being treasurer of the Freedom Rock Committee, and co-founder of Meals on Wheels program. She also served with Iowa Retired School Personnel in Denison. Joan was an avid card player and enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble, doing the daily puzzle, and watching the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco 49ers.

On Saturday, September 26, 2020, Joan died of Covid 19 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She was 86 years, 8 months and 20 days of age.
