Jerry Bernell, son of Ben and Hildred "Ilene" (Sheeder) Rosenbeck, was born April 9, 1944, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Jerry attended rural school and then Guthrie Center High School, graduating in 1963. In school, Jerry was a talented woodworker, making several beautiful pieces of furniture. After graduation, Jerry farmed until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. After 5 months, he received a hardship discharge because his brother was also in the service and he was needed to help on the family farm. Jerry also held a railroad job. He then entered into his lifelong career as a brick and block mason for Schmidt Masonry in Audubon and McLaughlin Construction in Manning. Many examples of Jerry's work exist in numerous towns in the area.
In late 1977, Jerry was united in marriage with Deloris Mendenhall. Their only son, Clinton Lee, was born in 1979. Jerry and Deloris divorced in 1983.
Jerry and Clint lived on two different farmsteads from then to now: one near Cumberland, then on a farm northwest of Exira where they both still lived.
In retirement, Jerry enjoyed his draft horses, fishing from the pond he built with his dozers, and spending time with his son, whom he loved very much.
Jerry passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021, at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Jerry is survived by his son Clinton Rosenbeck of Exira and a brother Mike Rosenbeck of Bayard. He was preceded in death by his parents.
