Jennie Adelia, daughter of John and Edna F. (Bower) Betts, was born September 26, 1923, in Guthrie County, Iowa. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1940 and then worked as a schoolteacher. On December 25, 1942, Jennie was united in marriage with Donald Alonzo Herron at the Methodist parsonage in Carroll. Four children were born to this union. Jennie worked in San Diego, California, while Don was stationed there with the Navy. Upon his discharge, Jennie and Don returned to Coon Rapids and farmed in Guthrie County until 1957 when they moved to a farm northwest of Coon Rapids. During the mid and late 1960s, Jennie also worked at Ocoma Foods in Carroll. In 1977 they moved into Coon Rapids. Don died April 23, 1997. Jennie lived in Carroll for five years before moving to Marquis Place in Elkhorn, Nebraska, where she thrived, enjoying new friends, many activities and outings. Jennie was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rebeckah Lodge, Past Noble Grand and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a long time member of Carrollton Community Club and a charter member of Carrollton Community Heritage Club. Her most important job was that of wife, mother and grandmother. On Thursday, November 9, 2006, Jennie died at Life Care Center of Elkhorn in Elkhorn, Nebraska, following several months of declining health. She was 83 years, 1 month and 14 days of age. Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son Richard Donald Herron in infancy; brothers Dale Betts and Leroy Betts and a sister Ada and husband Clarence Heater. She is survived by three sons: Ron Herron and Annette of Omaha, NE; Doug Herron of Coon Rapids and Jeff Herron of Coon Rapids; four grandchildren: Justin Herron and Amy Herron of Omaha, NE; Derek Herron and Brandon Herron of Coon Rapids; great-grandson Nathan Sleming of Omaha; sisters-in-law Ermal Betts of Ankeny; Naomi Kepple and Mildred Herron of Bayard; brothers-in-law Gene Crouch of Bayard and Gene Hilgenberg of Coon Rapids; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
