Lila Jeanene, daughter of Clifford E. and Gertrude (Fellows) Boyer was born March 19, 1930, in Elgin, IL.  Her father was a foreman on a Bell System Long Lines crew that traveled mostly in Iowa and Illinois. They stayed in hotels and rooming houses. When Jeanenes brother had to start school her father requested a section lineman job and he was given the section between Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, IA. The family settled in the town of Manchester where Jeanene began kindergarten in 1935. She continued her education in Manchester until after her freshman year when the family moved to Atlantic, where she graduated with the Class of 1948. She was inducted in the National Honor Society and was given the Quill and Scroll award for high school journalism. After high school she worked in the bookkeeping department at the Whitney Bank in Atlantic.

Jeanene was baptized and confirmed at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Atlantic in 1949.  Pastor Homer Larsen of St. Pauls Church presided at the marriage of Jeanene and Burton Esbeck of Elk Horn, on June 10, 1951.  Later that year Burton was inducted into the U.S. Army.  The couple then resided in Newburg and Rolla, MO, close to Ft. Leonard Wood.  After Burtons honorable discharge in 1953 they moved to Elk Horn, IA where they built their home.  Three children were born to this union.

Jeanene was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school and bible school teacher, as well as, secretary on the church council.  She was very active in the women of the church organization. She sang in church choirs, community choruses, small groups, and soloed for more than 50 years. She also served on the Danish Windmill Board and volunteered at the Genealogy Department at the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn. Her hobbies and interests were poetry, reading, sewing, genealogy, counted cross stitch, crewel embroidering, bird watching, and being a homemaker.

Jeanene survived a stroke in 1998.  In 2002 Burton and Jeanene were honored to be chosen king and queen of Tivolifest.  She entered heavenly rest on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at her home in Elk Horn at the age of 78 years, 10 months, and 19 days.

Jeanene was preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard E. Boyer and wife Janie. She is survived by her husband Burton Esbeck of Elk Horn; children: Sue and husband Jim Greene of Round Rock, TX; Lee Esbeck and wife Jane of Elk Horn and Ann Nitzel of Hastings, NE; four grandchildren: Angela and Lucas Esbeck, Alecia Tillman and Seth Nitzel; sister-in-law Shirley Esbeck of Elk Horn; two nephews Edward Boyer and Brian Willson; niece Janet Mullahey; other relatives and many friends.
