Jean Marie, daughter of Francis and Doris (Christensen) Berning was born on March 7, 1949 in Carroll, Iowa. She graduated from Carroll High School and then attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. Jean then taught school in Guam and in Germany. She was united in marriage with Joseph Bivona in Germany and they were parents of a son, Joseph Andrew Bivona. They later moved to New Jersey, where she worked as a teacher. Jean and her son moved to Carroll in 1998. In Carroll she taught school and then worked for American Home Shield. Jean enjoyed scrapbooking, reading, and watching television. For 23 years, Jean was a cancer warrior courageously battling the disease. Through it all, Jean remained positive and cherished the simple pleasures in life. In August 2011, Jean became a resident of the Carroll Health Center. On October 17, 2011 she died there at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 10 days. Jean was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents. She is survived by her son Joe Bivona and fiancée Jill Greving of Carroll; siblings: Mary Jo Pottebaum of Plymouth, Minnesota; Don Berning and wife Koleta of Ames; Roxanne and husband Steve Perry of Cyprus, Texas; Tom Berning and wife Cheryl of Boone and Cory Berning and wife Tina of Marion; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
