James Donald, the only child of Donald and Frances (Reil) Goodwin, was born March 3, 1943 on the family farm in Willow Township, Greene County, Iowa. He was raised on the farm and attended Willow #9 rural school through the fourth grade. He completed his education in the Bayard Community Schools, graduating with the Class of 1961. Jim worked with his dad on the farm and then worked for Linn Feeds delivering feed in the area. Jim worked for Western Electric out of Red Oak for a short time. On February 15, 1964 Jim was united in marriage with Judy Stone in Coon Rapids. They made their home in Scranton and were the parents of two children. Jim was a superintendent at Farmer's Elevator until 1973. He then worked as an electrician for Garst and Thomas in Coon Rapids until his retirement in 2005. Jim and Judy had purchased an acreage north of Coon Rapids in 2001. Along with their family, they completely finished the interior of the new home themselves. Jim could figure out and fix about anything mechanical or electrical. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, making many pieces of furniture over the years. He also enjoyed any activity that took him outdoors including fishing, gardening, and caring for his yard. Playing cards was also fun for him. Jim could often be found at flea markets hunting down bargains. Overall, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Jim's health began to fail early in 2012 however; he was able to remain at home with the care and support of his family. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home north of Coon Rapids on Monday, March 25, 2013 at the age of 70 years and 22 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; grandparents; father in law Carroll Stone and sister in law Carol Stone.
