Irma Schrad

September 26, 1919 — March 26, 2016

Irma Julia, daughter of William and Mary (Lamberty) Petersohn, was born September 26, 1919 on the farm in Carroll County, near Halbur, Iowa. She attended St. Augustine School in Halbur. During the World War II years she worked at a battery plant in Sioux City.

On April 9, 1947 Irma was united in marriage with Eugene “Bud” Schrad. They lived on farms near Halbur and Arcadia.  Three daughters were born to this union. Irma was a homemaker, caring for their children and helping on the farm. In the early 1950s they moved into Arcadia. After the death of her husband in 1999, Irma remained in their home in Arcadia. She was a member of St. John’s Parish and the Ladies Guild. Irma enjoyed reading, embroidery and being active in her grandchildren’s lives.  She always cherished visits from family and friends.

In 2010 Irma became a resident at Swan House and later Sunnybrook, both in Carroll.  In January of 2016 Irma moved to Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll where she died on Saturday, March 26, 2016.  She was 96 years and 6 months of age.

Preceding Irma in death are her husband Eugene; sisters Clara Berg (Frank), Leona Schlerman (Greg), Helen Leiting (Art), and Ethel Petersohn and brothers Henry Petersohn (Colette), Art Petersohn (Delores), Leo Petersohn and Leonard Petersohn.

She is survived by her three daughters Mary Best (Stan) of Glidden, JoAnn Gerken (Don) of Breda and Kathy Schrad of Linn Creek, MO; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; sister-in-law Edna Schrad of Templeton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
