            Irene, daughter of Paul Gottieb and Marie Marguerite (Clausen) Walde was born July 27, 1919 in Denison, Iowa.  She died March 24, 2008 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa at the age of 88.  She graduated from Denison High School and following graduation worked in an office in the Denison courthouse. 

            On December 4, 1943 she was united in marriage to Howard Smith in Omaha, Nebraska.  Irene worked for many years for the Draft Board in the Carroll County Court House.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll.  Irene enjoyed flower gardening and following sports teams especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. 

            Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Howard Smith on May 21, 2007 and the following brothers and sisters: Minnie Moeller, William Walde, Max Walde, Albert Walde, Henry Walde, Hattie Wulf, and Rose Larson.

            Irene leaves many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
