Irene Emma, daughter of Herman and Laura (Jensen) Hargens, was born November 21, 1912, in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural schools in Carroll and Audubon County. After her graduation from Manning High School in 1930, she worked as a hired girl for area families.
On February 5, 1936, Irene was united in marriage with Marvin H. Hansen at Carroll, Iowa. Two years later they began farming east of Manning. Irene and Marvin were the parents of four children. After 13 years on their original place they purchased their own farm. Marvin retired from farming in 1980 and he and Irene moved into their own home in Manning.
Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manning and was past chairman and co-chairman of the Ruth Circle. She enjoyed gardening, card playing and visiting with her friends.
Following the death of her husband in 1998, Irene remained in their home. When her health began to fail, she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home on October 17, 2007. Irene entered the Manning Regional Hospital a week before her death there on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the age of 95 years, 4 months and 12 days. Preceding Irene in death are her parents; husband; three brothers: Harold Hargens; Merlin Hargens and wife Lorraine; and Wayne Hargens; two sisters Louisa, in infancy, and Elaine and husband Gilbert Kroeger; sister-in-law Jaunita Hargens and son -in-law Donald Boswell.
She is survived by her four children: Duane Hansen of Butte, NE; Ronald Hansen and wife Theresa of Audubon; Janell Boswell of Macedonia, OH; and Carol and husband Larry Muhlbauer of Manning; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two brothers Donald Hargens of Brayton and Dewey Hargens and wife Opal of Manning; sister-in-law Marge Hargens of Des Moines; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
