Irene Margaret, the first child of Henry and Elizabeth (Berger) Bruening, was born September 19, 1906, at Maple River, Iowa. Irene and her siblings attended school in Arcadia. After completing her schooling she started working at home with her parents and helping on neighboring farms. Irene was a caregiver for families that had just given birth to a new baby in their home by caring for the older children and assisting the new mother. She then worked in a hospital in LeMars. After moving to Carroll Irene was a baker and cook in the dietary department at St. Anthony Hospital, retiring after 35 years. Irene was a member of Holy Spirit Parish where she was active in the Ladies Guild. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting and embroidery. She also enjoyed baking cookies and cakes, playing cards and going to lunch and visiting on the phone with family and friends.
In January of 2007, after her 100th birthday, Irene moved into the Carroll Health Center. She died there on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the age of 102 years, 10 months and 6 days.
Preceding Irene in death are her parents; sister Marcella and husband Adrian Snyder; two brothers Leonard Bruening and wife Louise and Wayne Bruening in infancy; brother-in-law Clarence Riesberg and great-nephew Darrin Riesberg.
She is survived by her sister Hiltrude Riesberg of Arcadia; nieces and nephews: Phyllis and husband Ron Riesenberg of Carroll; Roland Snyder of Breda; LaVonne and husband Lee Vonnahme of Westside; LeRoy Riesberg of Omaha; Arlene Bushman of Wichita, KS; Diane and husband Pete Bierl of Texas and Robert Riesberg and wife Donna of Roselle; 15 great-nieces and nephews; 20 great-great-nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
