Irene Anna Genzen

Irene Anna, daughter of William F. and Ida A. (Pithan) Schultz, was born November 23, 1920 in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized December 19, 1920 in Stockholm Township and confirmed March 25, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Irene attended rural school near her home followed by Zion Lutheran School in Denison and Denison High School, graduating in 1937. On December 1, 1939, Irene was united in marriage with Ivan Ralph Genzen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. They were the parents of three children. Irene and Ivan farmed in the Odebolt and Manning area before settling on a farm northeast of Manilla. In 1985 they retired from farming and moved into Manilla. Irene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. She enjoyed socializing with her neighbors and friends and getting together with her family. Card playing, crossword puzzles and bird watching were some of her favorite pastimes. Following the death of her husband on November 29, 2001 Irene continued to live in their home in Manilla. After a short illness, Irene died at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 21 days. She will be remembered for her generous gift to the Iowa Donor Network. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Ivan Genzen; sister Luella and husband Carl "Kelly" Musfeldt. Irene is survived by her three children: William "Bill" Genzen and wife Cindy of Des Moines; Deborah Bass of Council Bluffs and Denise and husband Verne Cadwell of Montezuma; 11 grandchildren: Louise Guiney; Hope Brown; Tom Genzen; Eric Genzen and wife Amanda; Suzy Bass; Tricia Bass; Joni Bass; Emily and husband Pastor Erik Gernander; Andrea and husband Michael Hake; Laura and husband Zack Nelson and Michael Cadwell; 17 great-grandchildren: Kyle Greene, William, Katelyn and Jackson Guiney; Ambyr, Quentin and Lucas Brown; Cody and Carter Genzen; Elizabeth, Daniel, Noah, Joshua, and Kaleb Gernander; Greta Hake; Abbi Nelson and Payton Genzen; sister Norma and husband James Olry of Richmond, CA; sisters-in-law LaVonne Gehlsen of Manning and Donna Genzen of Bloomington, IL; other relatives and many friends.
