Ida Magdalena, daughter of Otto and Rosa (Boldt) Vetter, was born September 25, 1912 on the Vetter family farm south of Arcadia, Iowa. She attended rural schools and then remained at home to help care for her younger siblings. Ida was baptized on November 10, 1912 and confirmed April 1, 1928, both at the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia where she became a lifetime member.

On December 7, 1932 Ida was united in marriage with Emil F. Schmidt at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Three children, Darlene, Larry and Roger, were born to this union. They farmed near Westside and then moved into Westside in 1944 where her husband was in the trucking business.

Ida candled eggs in Westside and then she and her husband owned and operated the Horse Head Caf. She was an outstanding cook and baker. She also worked for several families in the Westside and Carroll area. Ida was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Arcadia Cemetery Auxiliary and served as secretary for the Westside Cemetery Association for many years.  She belonged to many card clubs and loved to play Bingo.  Even though she worked outside the home, she was a great mother and homemaker and was devoted to her family.

Emil became a resident of Eventide Nursing Home in Denison in 1988 and died the next year on January 23, 1989. Ida continued to live in their home until her health began to fail when she became a resident of Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake in 2001. She died there on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the age of 96 years, 8 months and 2 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; two sons, Roger Schmidt and Larry Schmidt and wife Diane; grandson, at birth; and five siblings: Albert Vetter, Raymond Vetter, Selma Dalgety, Virgil Vetter and Valeria Vetter.

Ida is survived by her daughter Darlene and her husband Dale Lenz of Denison; daughter-in-law Marlene Schmidt of Wall Lake; eight grandchildren: Cindy and husband Delaine Boger; Christy Martinez and fiance Paul McDaniels; Karen and husband Dennis Albers; Debra Schmidt; Kevin Schmidt and wife Kim; Allen Schmidt and wife Karen; Dan Schmidt and wife Kathy; and Angie Meyer; 14 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Margaret Borkowski of Twilight Acres in Wall Lake; Bernice Branning of the Manning Plaza; Ruth Riessen of Vail and Phyllis Mumm of Westside; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
