Helen Wallace

   Helen Faye, daughter of Henry and Mary Maude (Hardin) Smith, was born May 16, 1912, in Bayard, Iowa. She attended school there and graduated from Bayard High School in 1930. She was a caretaker for a woman in Bayard after graduation.    In July of 1933, Helen was united in marriage with Wilfred Wallace in Ralston, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids.    Helen was a devoted homemaker, and she was famous for her homemade pies and cooking. She was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Helen knitted afghans for many people and was a member of a sewing club for over 50 years. Wilfred died October 21, 1972. Helen lived for over twenty years with her daughter Nancy in Coon Rapids.    She was a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home for three years and died there from complications of pneumonia on Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 21 days.    Besides her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by sister Ila Ott and brother Harold Smith.    Helen is survived by daughters Nancy and husband John Grettenberg of Coon Rapids, and Janie and husband Richard Patterson of Plano, TX; grandchildren John M. Grettenberg and wife Kathy of Coon Rapids, and Troy Harris and wife Cathi of Dallas, TX; step-grandchildren Joshua Patterson and wife Natalie of Flower Mound, TX, and Jared Patterson of Dallas, TX; great grandchildren Regan and Karly Grettenberg of Coon Rapids; step-great granddaughter Lilly Patterson; sister Ferne Ellis of Jamaica; brother Guy Smith and wife Litrice of Panora; brothers-in-law Jack Wallace and wife Mary Ann of Urbandale, and Clayton Wallace and wife Mary of Des Moines.
