Hazel I. Rasmussen

January 8, 1930 — October 22, 2019

    Hazel Irene, daughter of Clarence and Ida (Miller) Foxhoven, was born January 8, 1930, in Defiance, Iowa. When Hazel was in kindergarten, Hazel’s family moved to Manilla. She graduated from Manilla High School in 1949 and worked in a café for one year.


     On July 22, 1950, Hazel was united in marriage with Otto L. Rasmussen in Manilla. Two children were born to this union. In 1956 they built their own home in Manilla. Hazel worked at various jobs, mostly in local cafés, and then for two years at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. After the couple retired, they then spent their winters in Texas and Arizona. They enjoyed traveling in their camper, going square dancing and ballroom dancing.


     Throughout the years Hazel was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Manilla American Legion Auxiliary and Manning Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of a birthday club.


      On Tuesday, October 22, 2019, Hazel passed away at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 14 days after a very short stay.


     She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Otto Rasmussen in 2019; daughter Diane Rasmussen in 1997; a sister Mary Ann (Jack) Olberding; three brothers-in-law: Bob (Vivian) Rasmussen; Jack (Ellen) Rasmussen; Leo (Grace) Rasmussen; five sisters-in-law: Mable (Warren) Prosin; Elna (Lucian) Bender; Anna (Harold) Justice; Betty (Bob) Harvey; and Doris (Kenneth) Loeffelman.


     Hazel is  survived by a son Dennis (Rose) Rasmussen of Manilla; two grandsons: Jeff (Susan) Rasmussen of Gulfport, Mississippi; and Kurt (Tara) Rasmussen of Omaha, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Devon, Christian, Casey and Chance; sister Ethel Defenbaugh of Harlan; sister-in-law Carmen Heck of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
