Harvey Edward, son of Simon and Grace (Petersen) Andersen, was born December 13, 1921 on a farm in Carroll County, Iowa. Though his family moved around the local area, he mainly grew up in Guthrie County. Harvey went to Orange #9 School through the 8th grade and then graduated from Viola Consolidated School in 1940. He enlisted with the United States Army in 1942 and served in World War II in the 134th infantry. During his time in the Army, he was awarded five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Harvey was honorably discharged in 1945 and he moved back to Iowa. On November 20, 1948, Harvey and Dorothy (Davis) were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. From this union eight children were born. Harvey took over the family farming operation South of Coon Rapids in partnership with his brother. He farmed until his retirement in 1987. After he retired he continued to help out his sons with his farming operation until he and Dorothy moved into town in 2011. He was a member of the Coon Rapids Gurney Parker American Legion for 70 years, Deacon at the First Christian Church, Two Cylinder Club, Orange Township Trustee and the Heritage Club. Upon retiring from his greatest joy of farming, Harvey and Dorothy enjoyed playing BINGO, traveling, and spending time with family. Harvey's health began to fail in the spring of 2015. On June 9, 2015 he became a resident at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. He died there Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the age of 93 years, 8 months and 14 days. Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter Sonya in 1954; granddaughter Melinda Jo in infancy; brothers Arnold Andersen and John and his wife Carolyn Andersen; brother-in-law Gordon Cretsinger and sister-in-law Mary Jane Condiff.
