Greg Ronald, son of Ron and Renee (Schwery) Sibbel, was born December 2, 1987 at Carroll, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Vail along with his three sisters. Greg attended Holy Cross School in Vail and graduated from Kuemper High School in Carroll in 2006. He was a member of St. Ann Parish. After graduation Greg attended Simpson College in Indianola where he earned his bachelor's degree in Biology in 2010. Greg was passionate about his studies and enrolled in Washington University in St. Louis, MO working towards a doctoral degree in Development, Regenerative and Stem Cell Biology. His major emphasis was stomach stem cells and stomach cancer. He contributed to an article entitled "Stomach Cells Naturally Revert to Stem Cells" published in the magazine Cell. Greg was also passionate about his hobbies which included hunting, biking, rock climbing, cooking and eating all kinds of food. In March of 2013 Greg was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. He battled courageously for ten months and died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the age of 26 years and one day of age. Preceding Greg in death are his maternal grandparents Galen and Betty Schwery and paternal grandfather Ray Sibbel. Greg is survived by his parents Ron and Renee Sibbel of Vail; three sisters Amy Sibbel of West Des Moines; Lori (Jared) Christ of Ankeny and Tracy (Will) Swalwell of Johnston; niece Emma Christ; grandmother Flora Sibbel of Carroll; girlfriend Anna Boudoures; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Greg requests that, in place of flowers, memorials be made to CJ's Journey, a nonprofit organization providing hope to and assisting children and young adults with cancer and their families.In addition the organization raises funding for research.
