Grace Timms

Grace Evarista, twin daughter of Arthur John and Rose Barbara (Neuerburg) Schachtner, was born July 17, 1918, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. She attended St. Peter and Paul grade school and graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1936. Following graduation, Grace attended classes with the nursing class of St. Anthony Hospital in preparation for a position as a record librarian in the hospital. During her lifetime, Grace served as a surgical stenographer at the Mayo Clinic. Following Pear Harbor, she moved to Denver, CO, and worked for Drs. Howard and Lipscomb as a lab and x-ray technician. Grace was united in marriage with Dr. Raymond C. Scannell on April 18, 1945, in Denver. They adopted two children, Pamela Anne and Denis John. Dr. Scannell died on September 30, 1962. Beginning in 1963 Grace worked at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver, retiring in 1985. On August 19, 1967, Grace was united in marriage with Fred J. Timms at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Denver, with Rev. Bernard Degan officiating. In 1987 Fred and Grace moved to Carroll, IA. Through the years Grace was active in the USO, YMCA, served as a nursing home volunteer through the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary in Denver, was a member of the American Business Women's Assoc., the Archbishop's Guild, a supper club, and square dance and Viennese Waltz dance clubs. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, dancing and playing cards. In Carroll Grace was a volunteer at the Village Bargain Shoppe, the New Hope Bargain Shoppe, and RSVP activities. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and ladies' guild and also St. Rose of Lima Catholic Daughters of America. Grace died suddenly and unexpectedly at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa on Friday, January 28, 2011. she was 92 years, 6 months, and 11 days of age. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters: Helen Schachtner; Coletta and husband Clarence Cook; Lois Heim; and Sister Mary Agnes Schachtner (her twin); and 3 brothers: Joseph, Virgil and Ronald Schachtner (in infancy). She is survived by her husband Fred Timms of Carroll; children Pam and husband Alan Pickett of Manteno, IL; Denis and wife Denise Scannell of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sister Rita Olson of Coon Rapids, MN; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Schachtner and Shirley Schachtner, both of Carroll; and Mary Smith of David City, NE; other relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to Holy Spirit Church and Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in LaCrosse, WI.
