Grace Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Maude (Gassman) Schulte, was born July 8, 1917 at Canova, South Dakota. The family moved to Wynot, Nebraska and then on to Carroll, Iowa in 1933. Grace graduated from St. Angela Academy the following year. She worked for a time in the office at her father’s business, Carroll Credit Bureau.
Grace was united in marriage with Omer J. Langenfeld on June 24, 1943 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. Five children were born to this union. Grace stayed at home with her children until they were all in school. She then worked 20 years at Kuemper Catholic High School as the bookkeeper. Grace was a member of Holy Spirit Church and active in the Legion of Mary Auxiliary. She was a founding member of the bridge club, Pomtae Somateo, and an active participant for almost 70 years. Grace was a talented baker and enjoyed sewing and other hand-work. She was a gentle, kind woman and a welcoming hostess.
In November of 2008 Grace moved to St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. She died there on Friday evening, January 27, 2017 at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 20 days.
Grace is preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law Pat Young; great grandchildren Zach Kach and Amanda Ficek; brothers Vincent, Bernard, Raymond and Jerry Schulte; sisters Evelyn Goecke and Marilyn Kanne.
She is survived by her husband Omer Langenfeld of Carroll; sons Alan Langenfeld (Karen) of Cedar Rapids and Don Langenfeld (Holly) of Sagle, ID; daughters: Kathy Young of Rochester, MN; Mary Lou Klemmer (Dan) of Dublin, OH; and Jean Galasso of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother Cyril Schulte (Hilda) and sister Gloria Grimsman, both of Carroll; sisters-in-law Helen Meyers of Clear Lake and Gert Nagl of Carroll; many nieces, nephews and friends.
