Gerald Esbeck Petersen, son of Elmer B. and Corral (Esbeck) Petersen, was born October 22, 1916, at Elk Horn, Iowa. He attended Elk Horn schools before entering the United States Army during World War II. He served in the infantry for four years, primarily in the Pacific and New Guinea. Gerald worked for 35 years as the custodian at the Elk Horn-Kimballton schools. He was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. Gerald was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan and played on the local softball team as catcher. When his health began to fail in 2005, Gerald became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn. He died there on Monday, February 15, 2010, at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 24 days. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, sister Arlene Harper and brother Mervil Petersen. He is survived by cousins, other relatives and friends.
