Gerald John, son of William Eliza and Agnes Jennie (Visner) Goodwin, was born July 21, 1914, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended Oak Hill Rural School through the eighth grade, then began farming with his father and brothers.
On August 28, 1935, Gerald was united in marriage with Bethel Elizabeth Johnston at Glidden. The couple resided and farmed in the Coon Rapids area. Three daughters were born to their union. In addition to his farming activities, Gerald worked for Buchan and Alex Construction companies. Later he also worked at Berger Bros. Plumbing and Heating. Gerald retired in the late 1970s and sold the farm soon after. He continued to tend to an extensive garden and once cultivated over 600 tomato plants!
Gerald was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and shooting clay pigeons. Geralds family was a source of joy to him, and he cherished time spent singing to the baby grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.
Due to declining health, Gerald became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids in March of 2001. He died there on Monday, April 16, 2007, at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 26 days.
Preceding Gerald in death are his parents; infant daughter Janice June Goodwin; siblings Delbert and Raymond Goodwin, Violet Taylor, Viva Johnston, Neva Hart and June Thorn; and son-in-law William Andersen.
