George Franklin, son of Frank and Nora (Jensen) Musfeldt, was born June 24, 1924 at home on the farm in Jefferson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He attended rural school through the eighth grade and then completed high school in Manning, graduating with the Class of 1942. George worked at home on the farm with his dad until he was drafted into the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Lamberton in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his honorable discharge he returned to the Manning area. George was united in marriage with Gladys Polzin on May 5, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They lived in Manning and were the parents of three children. George worked at the Manning Mill owned by a mill in Denison that made Fidelity Pancake Flour. He traveled with his manager Scott Mayberry all over the area putting on pancake breakfasts. In 1960 the family moved to a farm and worked for Tommy Doyel for several years before starting to work for Howard French on his farm. In 1974 they moved into Irwin where George worked for the Irwin Farm Supply and later the Irwin Coop. While living in Irwin they transferred their church membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church located several houses from their home. After cancer surgery and treatment 2002, George continued working until a stroke in 2005 left him unable to continue. George was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manning and the Fire Department in both Manning and Irwin. In his spare time he loved to fish, going to Minnesota, Canada and South Dakota to follow his passion. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. When his wife could not take care of him at home due to her own health problems, George moved to the Manning Plaza in 2011. He died there on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 24 days. George is preceded in death by his parents; brother Melvin Musfeldt; sister Helen and her husband Glen Brady; brother-in-law Alvin Jentzen and brother and sister in law Howard and Arlene French. He is survived by his wife Gladys Musfeldt of Irwin; three children Sheryl and husband Richard Zinke of Audubon, Carol and husband Orrin Bruhn of Irwin and Richard Musfeldt and wife Jean of Irwin; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Norma Jentzen of Carroll; sister-in-law Melba Musfeldt of Phoenix, AZ and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
