Eugene Edward "Gene", son of Walter and Ella (Sibbel) Rohe, was born October 22, 1925, in Carroll County, near Templeton, Iowa. He attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton until he began farming with his family. Gene was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1951 at Omaha, NE. He served with the 91st TSU Depot #2 as a military police at the Atlanta General Depot, Atlanta, GA. In February of 1953 he was honorably discharged and returned to Iowa. Gene and Leona Meislahn were united in marriage on October 27, 1953 at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton and lived in Carroll for a short time before moving to a farm east of Gray. In 1962 they moved to their farm southeast of Manning, the former Hugo Brus farm, where they farmed and raised their seven children. After thirty one years there, in 1993, they retired and moved into their new home in Manning located on the former elementary school lot. Gene was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning. He enjoyed farming most of all and in his spare time enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing, dancing, occasional trips to a casino and watching westerns and game shows on television. Above all, he took great pleasure in family gatherings and seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene's health began to fail in April 2010 when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; however, he was able to remain at home with the loving care of his family. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 11 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; two sons Mike Rohe and Merlin Rohe both in 2006; three brothers Norbert Rohe and wife Bertille; Glen Rohe and wife Millie and Wayne Rohe and wife Esther; and sister-in-law Martha Rohe.
