Ronald Gene? Eugene, son of Bert and Bertha (Decker) McCollum, was born February 21, 1925, in Greene County near Jefferson, Iowa. He lived on the family farm and attended country school. After his schooling he began farming on both his familys farm and with neighbors.
On September 8, 1946, Gene was united in marriage with Shirley Peters at the United Methodist Church in Manning. A son, Steven, was born into this union.
The couple resided in Jefferson for one year before moving to a farm west of Manning owned by Shirleys family. Gene farmed that land for 50 years and sold DeKalb Seed Corn for eight years before retiring and moving into Manning in 1990. He then worked for Meryl Kerkhoff in his farming operations for ten years.
Gene was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Manning and the Methodist Mens Group. He also served as a board member of the Aspinwall Coop, an Iowa Township Trustee, and as a leader of the Win and Grin 4H Group. In his spare time Gene enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball and spending time with his grandchildren. He bowled as a member of United Methodist Mens bowling team that won the first league championship in Manning.
After a short illness, Gene died early on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 27 days.
Preceding Gene in death are his parents; four sisters: Gladys Mallett, Louise Jordan, Hazel Salisbury, and Margaret Leeka; two brothers Bert Jr. and Donald McCollum; and his wifes parents Orla Peters and wife Edna.
He is survived by his wife Shirley McCollum of Manning; son Steven McCollum and wife Linda of Council Bluffs; three grandchildren: Chad McCollum of Beatrice, NE; Jeramy McCollum of Council Bluffs; and Mandy and husband Bill Lawler of Carroll; three great-grandchildren: Jacob McCollum, and Madison and Garrett Lawler; many other relatives and friends.
