Francis Orville, son of Orville and Cora (Gordon) Malcom, was born March 8, 1913, near Sidney in Fremont County, Iowa. He attended Sidney schools through the tenth grade at which time his help was needed on the family farm. On December 24, 1935, Francis was united in marriage with Helen Edgerton at Sidney, IA. Five children were born to this union. They lived in Tabor for a number of years before moving to a farm near Red Oak. They farmed from 1938 till 1960 when he started in the John Deere Implement dealership in Coon Rapids. Helen died on November 22, 1975. Francis retired after 17½ years affiliated with John Deere. He was married to Pauline M. Olesen on August 28, 1976, at Perry. They enjoyed traveling and wintered in Texas for many years. Pauline died on January 30, 2000. Francis was a long time member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. Due to failing health, Francis became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids on July 6, 2000. He died there on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 2 days. Besides his two wives and parents, two sons Lowell Oliver Malcom and Carroll Dean Malcom, brother Kenneth Malcom, sister Naomi Richardson and step-granddaughter Holly Powers precede Francis in death. He is survived by three children: Betty Powers (Ron) of Harlan; Gary Malcom and Lois Crook of Boone and Allan Malcom (Rita) of Coon Rapids; six grandchildren: Cindy Maxwell-Ostdiek (Fred) of Omaha; Julie Maxwell of Omaha; Jeanette Nichols (John) of Tulsa, OK; Scott Malcom (Shannon) of Web City, MO; Allison Langel (Dave) of Coon Rapids and Nathan Malcom (Anna) of Maple River; two step-grandchildren Jennifer Hernandez (Jeff) of Harlan and Philip Powers of Hancock; seven great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; brother Dale Malcom (Mary) of Randolph; two sisters Ruth Fichter of Tabor and Marjorie White (Russell) of Shenandoah; sister-in-law Harriet Malcom of Tabor; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
