Ferne Myrtle, daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle (Knight) Hartwigsen, was born May 17, 1928, on the family farm Southeast of Glidden. She was baptized in the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Ferne attended country schools growing up and graduated from Glidden High School in 1945. She continued her education in Normal Training in Cedar Falls and taught rural school for a number of years. Ferne was united in marriage with Daryle Betts, on her parent's 31st wedding anniversary, December 12, 1948, at Pleasant Ridge. Two children were born to this union. Ferne worked a variety of jobs over the years, including Boomsma Eggs in Glidden, Frigidaire in Jefferson, Coon Rapids Bayard Middle School as a cook, and still managed to help Daryle on the farm. Later on she worked at the Betts Standard Station in Bayard. Daryle and Ferne enjoyed driving the countryside picking up pop cans and later attending congregate meals. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary. Ferne was a loving mother and family was her life. She took great care of Daryle later in life and they were able to stay in their home together until Daryle passed away January 6, 2014. Ferne became ill three weeks ago and was able to remain home with the help of hospice and her family. She was surrounded by her loving family when she died in her home in Bayard on Friday, March 14, 2014. She was 85 years, 9 months and 25 days of age. She was preceded in death by her husband Daryle; her parents and parents in law; brother Roy (Evelyn) Hartwigsen; sister Eunice (Harold) Bonney; brothers in law Billy Dean Betts; Estel (Carol) and (Ardel) Betts. Ferne is survived by her son Richard D. (Irene) Betts of Tucson, AZ; daughter Susan K. (Kevin) Dorr of Bayard; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brothers in law Richard (Lois) Betts of Guthrie Center; Bob (Denise) Betts of Hampton, NE; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
