Ervin John, the son of John & Mary (Langel) Bauer, was born on March 28th, 1931 near Willey, Iowa. He grew up there and graduated from school in Halbur.
Ervin was drafted on September 15, 1952 and was to report to Burk Hotel in Carroll, Iowa where he met with nine other men to be drafted to the Army. From there, they were put on a bus and taken to an induction center in Omaha. After being there for a bit, they were put on another bus and taken to a reception center at Camp Crowder, MO. When there, they got their army uniforms and a short haircut. They spent a few days there, and then were split up. Ervin was sent to Camp Breckinride, KY. He spent 16 weeks of basic training there. He then got a 10-day pass, and spent time with his family and friends. On February 17, 1953, he was assigned to the Seventh Army 45th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion at Kaiserslautern, Germany. He was promoted to Corporal on February 26, 1954 and received the Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was a truck driver with Battalion Battery A and was honorably discharged on September 1, 1954.
Ervin was united in marriage to Marguerite Mary Kanne on September 8th, 1956 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. They resided north east of Manning. He farmed and managed the Gambles store in Manning until 1966. In 1968, Ervin was hired by the Manning Hospital and worked there until his retirement in 1998. He then worked part time as the maintenance man at Terrace Apartments for 10 years until his retirement in July of 2009. Ervin also started in the real estate rental business in 2002. In 2005 he sold the business to his son Jeff. Ervin was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and American Legion in Manning.
His wife Marguerite passed away in June of 2005 after 49 years of marriage. To keep himself busy, he liked to mow grass & garden. Ervin never missed a wrestling event on TV. He also enjoyed visiting his boys and their families and doing crossword puzzles.
Ervin continued to live at home through several healthcare challenges. He moved to Char-Mac Assisted Living for a brief time. Ervin died on Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. Preceding him in death are his wife, Marguerite, parents John & Mary Bauer, and four brothers.
Ervin is survived by his six sons: Keith Edward (Susana) Bauer of Ankeny, Kevin John Bauer of Manning, Jeffrey James Bauer of Manning, James Dean (Melissa) Bauer of Denison, Kenny Ervin (Diane) Bauer of Manilla, and Kerry Mark Bauer of Manning; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; sister MaryAnn (Donald) Haberl of Maple River; other relatives and friends.
