Emmert Walter, son of Walter and Mary (Jepsen) Nelson, was born May 1, 1934, near Rorbeck, Iowa. He grew up on his parents farm 1 ½ miles east of Rorbeck and attended Clay No. 5 rural school. He then attended Elk Horn-Kimballton High School graduating with the Class of 1951. Emmert was baptized and confirmed at Elk Horn Lutheran Church.
From 1956 to 1958 Emmert served in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the Des Moines and Elk Horn areas where he drove truck for various agricultural related industries. On August 9, 1976 Emmert was united in marriage with Beverly Leigan Green at Sturgis, SD. They enjoyed riding motorcycles for many years. Emmert loved motorcycles, had lots of friends and was fond of a good joke. Beverly died on April 14, 1999 and is buried in St. Johns Cemetery, Audubon County, Iowa.
Also in 1999 Emmert became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn where he died peacefully on Monday, April 16, 2007, at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Preceding Emmert in death are his parents; wife Beverly; step-son Tom Green and sister Annabelle Madsen.
He is survived by his three grandchildren: Paula Green and husband Rich Carmichael of Springfield, MO; Jason Green and wife Lisa of Bentonville, AK and Will Green of Stewartville, MO; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Earl Madsen of Elk Horn; nieces Carolyn and husband Jerry Larson and Kimberly and husband Mike Williams; other relatives and many friends.
