Elsie Carrie, daughter of Lawrence and Sigrid N. (Halvorsen) Christensen, was born April 5, 1917, in Astor, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Astor. Elsie attended country schools near her home and then graduated from Manilla High School in 1936. After completing her education, Elsie worked for other families in their homes caring for children, doing housework and even milking cows.
On November 24, 1937, Elsie was united in marriage with Andrew H. Soll at the Lutheran Parsonage in Irwin. Four children were born to this union. They lived around Astor and Manilla most of their lives, finally settling on a farm west of Manilla. Elsie enjoyed the outdoor life on the farm, helping her husband pick corn with horse and wagon and taking care of the chickens. She worked in her flower garden and tended a large vegetable garden on the farm. She also made clothes for her daughters and enjoyed crocheting, ceramics and making the best bread around, according to her family.
In 1984, Elsie and Andrew moved into Manilla. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Elsie was a member of the Priscilla Guild, Nishna Valley Club and Better Homes Club. She also belonged to many card clubs.
After the death of her husband in 1991, Elsie was able to remain in their home until 2005 when she became a resident of the Manilla Manor. While in the nursing home, she continued her love of growing flowers in her room, crocheting and playing cards.
Elsie died peacefully on January 17, 2009, at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home, Manilla, at the age of 91 years, 9 months and 12 days.
Preceding her in death are her husband; son at birth; two great-grandchildren; parents; sister Mae Rold; brother Lawrence Christensen and his wife Pauline; half-brother Arthur Christensen; two half-sisters Lillie Christensen and Ruby Wright; and son-in-law Harry Sonderman.
She is survived by her three daughters: Jeanette and husband Loren Ferry of Manilla; Marilyn Sonderman of Waterloo; and Carolyn Palmer of Irwin; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; one brother Chriss Christensen and wife Augusta of Bakersfield, CA; sister Ella Moore of Bennettsville, SC; two brothers-in-law Roy Soll and his wife Ruth of Manning and Ernest Soll of Vancouver, WA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
