Elmer Lee, son of George and Helen (Wickland) Stenstrom, was born August 21, 1926 at home in Audubon County, Iowa. Following graduation from Viola High School, he farmed in Audubon and Carroll Counties. On February 23, 1947, he was united in marriage with Thelma Ruth Coulter. Thelma passed away in 1996. Elmer was united in marriage with Jean Heydon at the Little Brown Church in the Vale on August 11, 1998. Elmer was a long-time resident of Coon Rapids and an active member of the community. He served on the Four County Fair Board for 35 years and the Farm Bureau Board for 15 years. Elmer was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. In his retirement he enjoyed year-round yard work, metal crafts and working in his shop. Elmer became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids in 2007. He died there on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 18 days. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Thelma; brother Albert Stenstrom; sisters Doris Walker and Evelyn Hansen. Survivors include his wife Jean Stenstrom; brother Ed Stenstrom of Coon Rapids; daughters Phyllis Garnant of New Jersey and Helen Schlegel of Indiana; grandchildren Lara Garnant, Captain Karl Schlegel, USMC and Erik Schlegel; great grandchildren Parker and Alison Schlegel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-children around the country.
