Ella M. Engel

   Ella Mae, daughter of George and Mary (Petsche) Sternberg, was born June 13, 1919 near Defiance, Iowa. George and Mary farmed near there and Ella attended school in Defiance.

   On October 9, 1940 Ella was united in marriage with Leo Engel at St. Peter’s Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union. Leo and Ella lived in Omaha for a short time before returning to farm near Westphalia, Iowa where Leo had spent his childhood. In 1970 they moved to Manilla where Leo worked as a feed salesman for a few years before suffering a number of strokes. After several years in the nursing home Leo died in 2001.

   Ella was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and a member of the Catholic Daughter of America.  For a number of years she did volunteer work at the Manilla Manor.  She was a helpmate on the farm and a wonderful homemaker and mother to her children. In her spare time, she enjoyed dancing, playing cards (especially bridge) and bowling. She received many bowling trophies over the years.

   Ella remained in their home until 2011, when she was no longer able to live alone. She then became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home.

On Sunday, October 27, 2019 Ella passed away at Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, Iowa.  She was 100 years, 4 months and 14 days of age.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo Engel; a daughter Sheila (Doug) Bornhoft; and a brother Neil Sternberg.

   Ella is survived by her children: Douglas Engel and wife Beverly of Omaha, NE; Keith Engel and wife Ann of Council Bluffs; and Kathy and husband Mike Kintner of Mesa, AZ; four grandchildren: Eric Kintner and wife Alicia of Denver; Lisa Bornhoft-Muska and husband John of Cadott, WI; Paul Bornhoft and wife Celene of Des Moines; and Kati Bornhoft of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren: Kennedy Grace Kintner; Kai Kintner; and Averett Muska; other relatives and friends.
