George Eldon, son of George and Emma (Flint) Olson, was born November 13, 1918 near Manilla in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural school and then graduated from Manilla High School in 1936. Eldon completed two years in the business accounting program at American Institute of Business in Des Moines before starting work for a meat packing company.

While at AIB, Eldon met Leona Sophia Plagman. They were united in marriage on October 6, 1940 at the United Church of Christ in Peterson, Iowa. They lived in Manilla a short time before moving to Des Moines where they lived while Eldon worked at Hy-Line Hatchery, a division of Pioneer.  After several years, they moved to Denison where he worked in the hatchery and feed business for Tenhulzen & Sons. In 1951, at the urging of his mother, Eldon moved his family back to the farm near Manilla where he worked with his dad until he took over the farming operation in 1966.  Eldon and Leona moved into Manilla in 1977 and he continued the work as a hail and crop insurance adjuster that he had started while living on the farm. He retired from farming in 1984 when his son Allen bought out the partnership and from insurance adjusting in 1990.

Eldon liked to fish in his spare time and thoroughly enjoyed his work as an insurance adjuster. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. After his wifes death in 1997, he remained in their home in Manilla.

After his health began to fail, Eldon became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in December of 2004.  He was content and enjoyed visits with family and friends until shortly before his death on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 22 days.

Preceding Eldon in death are his parents; wife; sister Edna, at birth; brother-in-law Phil Olson and Leonas twin brother Leo Plagman and wife Louise.

Eldon is survived by three sons: David Olson and wife Paula of LeClaire; Ron Olson and wife Kay of Lake Stevens, WA; Allen Olson and wife Michele of Manilla; seven grandchildren: Emily and husband Dax Slaughter; Kinsey and husband Steve Christin; Clay Olson; Alisa Olson; Nate Olson; Natalie & husband Richard Dennis and Nelia Olson; four great-grandchildren: twins Isabella and Madeline Slaughter; Cohen Christin and Elisha Dennis; sisters-in-law Mary Ann and husband Forrey Barnes of Ames and Virgie Mae Olson of Kansas; other relatives and friends.
