Ed was raised in the Willey area on the family farm and attended parochial school. After completing his education, Ed worked on the family farm. On February 8, 1938, he was united in marriage to Loretta Kasperbauer at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. Ed and Loretta purchased their own farm southeast of Manning and raised their eight children. Upon his retirement in 1972, Ed and Loretta moved into their new home in Manning. Even during his early days of retirement, you would still find Ed on a tractor helping out where he could. After Loretta passed away on August 15, 1980, Ed continued to live in Manning and help with farm operations as needed, especially on the Manilla farm. On September 18, 1982, Ed was blessed with a second marriage to Genevieve Petersen. Ed and Genevieve made their home in Manning. Ed and Genevieve enjoyed traveling to Texas during the winter months to visit family and friends and to enjoy retirement together. After Genevieve's passing on February 15, 2003, Ed continued to reside in Manning. In his spare time, Ed enjoyed playing board games, especially dominoes and Spinners, reading, politics and current events, cooking and sitting on the front porch on warm nights talking with people as they passed by. He was very interested and supportive of his grandchildren throughout his life. Ed enjoyed good health, a sharp mind and an active life until recently. He entered the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Thursday and was transported the following day by air ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where he passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the age of 98 years, 8 months and 22 days.
