Edward B. Sextro

April 17, 1923 — December 27, 2010

Edward Bernard, son of John and Clara Lechtenberg Sextro, was born April 17, 1923 at Butte, Nebraska. At the age of four years he moved to Manning, Iowa with his parents and siblings. Ed received his education at rural schools near his home northeast of Manning. On February 20, 1943 Ed was inducted into the U.S. Army and was a heavy truck driver in the Southern Philippines. He was honorably discharged on January 9, 1946 and received a bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Upon his return to Manning, Iowa in 1946 he continued his life-long love of farming the land. In addition, he raised cattle and hogs. Ed was a life time member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning, as well as a member of the Templeton Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling, golfing, bowling, playing cards and attending service reunions. After his semi-retirement, Ed remained on his farm until he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in October of 2009. He died there on Monday, December 27, 2010 at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 10 days. Ed is preceded in death by his parents; siblings and in-laws Edna Sextro, Maxine Meier, Helen and Joe Lampe, Herb Sextro and Leon Masching; niece Teresa (Sextro) Buffington and nephew Thomas Vanderheiden. He is survived by three sisters Marie Sextro, Dorothy Masching, and Ruth Vanderheiden, all of Carroll; three brothers Leo Sextro of Manning; Leonard Sextro and his wife Dolores of Manning and Norbert Sextro and his wife Dora of Surprise, AZ; in-laws Janet Sextro of Carroll and Warren and Rosemary Meier of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
