Edith Cadwell

May 30, 1923 — December 12, 2014

Edith Elaine, daughter of Walter and Lucile (Miller) Simmerman, was born May 30, 1923 at Indianola, IA. She graduated from Manilla High School and received her teacher's certificate from Simpson College in Indianola. On June 2, 1944, Edith was united in marriage with Vyrl Eldon Cadwell at the Methodist Church in Manilla. Six children were born to this union and the family made their home on the Cadwell Century Farm south of Manilla. For a couple years Edith taught elementary school in Manilla, Scranton and in a country school east of Irwin. She was a talented musician and vocalist, teaching violin lessons and playing with the "Greenridge Gang" at the Irwin Greenridge Festivals. Edith loved to sing in church, both as a soloist and with the choir. She also taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. Edith was an accomplished quilter, creating a quilt for each grandchild. She enjoyed being part of the Jefferson Community Club. Edith and Vyrl travelled quite a bit to visit their children and grandchildren through the years. Their marriage bond was an inspiration to all who came in contact with them. Edith's strong faith was reflected in every aspect of her life and the word of God sustained her until the very end of her life. Due to her failing health, Edith moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison in 2013, and Vyrl followed her the next year. The couple celebrated 70 years of loving marriage in the summer of 2014. Edith died at Eventide on Friday night, December 12, 2014, at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 12 days. She is preceded in death by her parents; grandson Ron Bigley; and sisters Mary Smart (Marvin) and Louise Aldrich. Edith is survived by her husband Vyrl Cadwell, Denison; six children: Keith Cadwell (Linda), Ames; Martha Pearson (Gary), Forney, TX; Kathleen Kathy' Hout (Jerry), Sioux Falls, SD; Dorothy Ackley (Colin), Farmington, NM; Anita LeStrange (Todd), Paullina; Bryan Cadwell (Valori), Oxford, WI; 17 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; Vyrl's sister-in-law Evelyn Cadwell, Spencer; other relatives and friends.
