Edward "Ed" Ernest Ohl, age 71, died peacefully at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Born June 5, 1943, Ed was raised in Manhattan, New York. He attended Parkville College in Missouri before moving to Chicago to work at the Ford Motor Company. He then moved to New Orleans to work as an auditor. In June of 1969, Ed married JoAnn Peters of Manning, Iowa and moved back to Manhattan to pursue a career as a stockbroker at the New York Stock Exchange. After four years of city life, he settled his family in Sparta, New Jersey and continued to work at the Exchange. After sustaining a head injury in a car accident in May of 1997, Ed switched gears and spent the next couple years rehabilitating and working odd jobs. In July 1999 he and JoAnn made their final move to her hometown of Manning, Iowa, where he worked as a caregiver with the Department of Human Services, and at New Hope Village in Carroll. He ended his working days as the administrator of veterans' affairs of Carroll County. While living in New Jersey, Ed enjoyed acting in a variety of roles in the community theater, golfing and boating. In Manning Ed found his niche with the American Legion. He was very active at the Legion, serving on the Post Ceremonial Team and two terms as President. Ed was a voracious reader and also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word scrambles. Ed's greatest passion was his son, Alex. He was a volunteer coach for his son's disabled baseball team, the Roadrunners, and they often watched baseball games together on TV. There's a good chance they are in heaven right now, teasing over which team is better, the Cubs or the Cardinals. Ed is survived by his wife, JoAnn Ohl, daughter Erika and JJ Brandstatter of Broomfield, Colorado, and two grandsons, Jack and Chase. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and his son, Alex. Memorial contributions are welcome and may be mailed to New Hope Village Foundation, c/o the Alex Ohl Memorial Fund, PO Box 887, Carroll, IA 51401.
