Duane Edwin, son of Edwin and Lolida (Schroeder) Wegner was born April 16, 1926 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He attended school until his eighth grade graduation and then farmed with his parents.
Duane was inducted into the United States Army on April 3,1945. The day he came out of basic training WWII was over. He was sent to Okinawa, Japan where he served for a year until he was honorably discharged on December 30, 1946.
On February 18, 1951 Duane was united in marriage to Arlene Ladehoff at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. From this union four children were born, Gail, Karen, Dean and Roger.
He and Arlene farmed south of Botna until they moved in to Manning in 1978. Duane was a lifelong farmer; having farmed for over 65 years. He slowed down working in the last years of his life but he never officially retired. When he could no longer farm, he loved to drive the country roads viewing the crops.
Duane was a member of the Manning VFW and Zion Lutheran Church. He was recognized by the Manning VFW on December 5, 2015 for holding the post's longest membership of 70 years. Duane was soft-spoken and easy going. He enjoyed watching old westerns, liked dogs, became an accomplished cookie baker, went on fishing trips, and enjoyed playing cards.
Duane became a resident of the Manning Plaza in May of 2016. He died there on Wednesday August 3, 2016 at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Arlene Wegner in 2012; granddaughter Kaelyn Odendahl and brother Robert (Shirley) Wegner.
Duane is survived by his children Gail (James) Richardson of Audubon, Karen (Gary) Odendahl of Carroll, Dean (Kim) Wegner of Phoenix, AZ and Roger Wegner of Manning; grandchildren Jennifer Richardson of Audubon, Jessica (Dave) Toillion of Spokane, WA, Jeff (Elizabeth) Richardson of Newton, Angie (Bruce) Tigges of Phoenix, AZ, Laurie (Jonathan) Wellendorf of Ankeny, Scott (Mallory) Odendahl of Ankeny, Julie Southwick of Ankeny, Michelle Wegner of Phoenix, AZ, Elizabeth Wegner of Phoenix, AZ and Adam Wegner of Phoenix, AZ; 17 great grandchildren; brother Allen (Joyce) Wegner of Farifax, VA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
