Duane LaVerne, son of Wesley and Eunice (Parker) Davis was born January 13, 1926, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended school in Coon Rapids, graduating in 1944. Upon graduation Duane enlisted in the United States Air Force and served from June of 1944 to November of 1945, primarily as a MP in Texas. Duane then returned to Coon Rapids and farmed. On February 17, 1946, Duane was united in marriage with Dorothy Carlson at Rockwell City. Two children were adopted into this union. Duane and Dorothy farmed in Orange Township where they raised hogs, feeder cattle and chicken and farmed their 240 acres along with other rental ground. In 1972 Duane suffered a heart attack and quit farming in 1973. He then worked as a crop adjuster for different insurance companies until retiring in 1996. Duane also sold seed corn for Garst & Thomas for 30 years. Duane was a Shriner, Past-master of the Masonic Lodge, where he was a 50-year member, and a Past-patron of the Eastern Star. He also served as Past-commander of the American Legion. His family was first in his life. Duane enjoyed the company of his dog Blackjack, being outside, fishing in Canada, gambling, watching sports on television especially basketball and football, and playing the card games Rummy and Pinochle. In October of 2005, Duane was diagnosed with cancer. That November Duane became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids, Iowa, where he died Tuesday, June 20, 2006. He was 80 years, 5 months and 7 days of age. Duanes parents and his daughter Terry Davis precede him in death. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Davis of Coon Rapids; son Larry Davis and wife Mary Ann of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister Colleen and husband Edward Buzz Kinnick of Bayard; aunt Margaret Zeller of Bagley; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
