Duane Keith, son of Henry Mason and Iva (Bean) Johnson, was born August 1, 1920, near Coon Rapids in rural Carroll County, Iowa. He attended rural and Coon Rapids schools and then enlisted into the United States Navy. Duane trained and served in Illinois, Texas, California, Virginia and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Aviation Machinist Second Class. Upon his return to Coon Rapids, Duane went into construction with his father and brothers until becoming self-employed as a carpenter in 1958. On May 14, 1946 Duane was united in marriage with Waneta Pauline Rinehart at her parents' home south of Coon Rapids. They lived in Coon Rapids until 1961 when they purchased their home in Bayard. Duane and Waneta were the parents of three sons Richard, Ronald and Randall. Duane was a carpenter his entire life and loved working with wood, tending his yard and tinkering with machinery. He retired in 1992 after a battle with cancer and in 1993 he developed emphysema which he fought the rest of his life. Duane was a member of the Church of Christ and the American Legion in Bayard. Waneta died in 2009 and Duane continued to live in their home in Bayard. With the help of hospice and the care of his family, Duane was able to remain at home when his health continued to fail.
