Dorothy Luella, daughter of William G. and Elisabeth (Jurgens) Asmus, was born September 1, 1918, south of Manning in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She was baptized November 10, 1918 and confirmed May 13, 1934 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Gray in Lincoln Township, Audubon County. Dorothy attended rural school near her home. On December 23, 1936, Dorothy was united in marriage with Donald P. Beck at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township. Three children were born to this union. They farmed for nine years in Audubon County before moving to a farm south of Manning for three years. Then they farmed east of Manning for a number of years until Donald died unexpectedly on March 3, 1961. Dorothy and her son Stanley farmed until January of 1962 when she had a farm sale and moved into Manning. Dorothy moved to Nebraska to be near her sister and while there earned her G.E.D. in Lincoln in 1965. She also worked for a florist in Norfolk. She returned to Manning and worked in town and at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan as a nurse's aide. In 1971, she was united in marriage with John Fonken. They lived on a farm north of Manning until John's death on August 23, 1978. Dorothy remained in Manning. In August of 1980, Dorothy was united in marriage with Robert Dunlap. They enjoyed fishing in Canada, traveling and visiting with their families in California, Florida and Iowa. After Robert's death in August of 1988 Dorothy moved into Manning and enjoyed working with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Carroll County. In July of 1997 she married Elmer Reimer and moved to Schleswig where she remained until 2001. Elmer had died in November of 2000. Dorothy moved back to her home town of Manning to be near her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed attending her church, Zion Lutheran, and the Ladies Zion Guild and helping when ever need. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, sewing and making things for her family and baking and decorating cakes for weddings of her children and grandchildren. When Dorothy was no longer able to care for herself at home she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, where she died on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 15 days. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; and sister Gladys (Herman) Sonksen and brother Donald Asmus (Earleen). She is survived by her three children: Gerald Beck and wife Rita of Manning; Stanley Beck and wife Zoy of Moorseville, IN; and Carol and her husband Ronald Brus of Manning; step son Allan Fonken of Coeur d'Alene, ID; grandchildren Paul Beck (Erin); Heidi Beck; Neal Beck (Ceir); Sarah Beck; Dan Beck; David Beck (Val); Donald Beck (Trisha); Teresa (Brian) Murphy; Kevin Brus (Janet); and Duane Brus (Laura); step-grandchildren Deborah (Paul) Clotier and Timothy Fonken (Kirsten); numerous great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sister Lillian Nolte of Auburn; sister in law DeLoris Asmus of Wauseca, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
