Dorothy Ann Sutherland Arp, daughter of Gordon and Gertrude (Timmerman) Sutherland was born March 21, 1921 at Manning, Iowa. She lived her entire life in Manning, having graduated from Manning High School in 1939. She then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. In 1941 she returned to Manning to keep house for her father after her mothers death.

On August 2, 1942 Dorothy was united in marriage with Lyle O. Arp at the Manning First Presbyterian Church. Two children were born into this union. Dorothy stayed active working with youth as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader and in the Grandparents Program at Manning Community Schools. She was an active member for the First Presbyterian Church, secretary for the Salona Chapter O.E.S. for 30 years and was a charter member of the Manning Chapter of P.E.O. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, crocheting, playing bridge, bowling, golfing and playing tennis. In retirement Dorothy and Lyle enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Europe, Austrailia, New Zealand, China, South America and across the United States.
